Comparison rate warning and base criteria
Base criteria: repayment figures shown in this table are calculated on a loan of $20,000 over 5 years. Repayment estimates use each loan’s advertised interest rate, with the comparison rate shown beside it as a guide to total cost. Where a lender publishes a range of rates, the estimate uses the lowest rate in the range, and the rate you are offered depends on your circumstances. These figures are examples only. They are not a quote, and they may not include all fees and charges.
*Warning: the comparison rate shown is calculated by the lender on its own standard example, usually a $30,000 loan over 5 years. This comparison rate is true only for the example given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate.
About this table: we publish this table so you can research credit products, by bringing together in one place the banking data lenders publish under the Consumer Data Right. Using that data, we have tried to show products that match this table’s title. This table does not compare all products, and there may be products with a lower rate in the market that are not shown here. Do your own research to find a product that suits your needs and financial goals. See how we choose products for tables like this.
Products are selected for relevance to the table and to the filters applied. They are not suggestions or recommendations, and the order they appear in is not a ranking of suitability.

Rates, fees and charges are subject to change without notice. Before acting on any information shown here, you should confirm the rates, fees, charges and product information with the provider. For clarity, where we have used the terms “lowest” or “best”, these relate solely to the rates of interest offered by the provider and not to any other factor. The application of these terms to a particular product is subject to change without notice if the provider changes their rates.
This table does not compare every feature that may be relevant to you. Changing the filters will surface further relevant products. See how we sort and rank products and how we make money.

What is an unsecured personal loan?
An unsecured personal loan doesn't ask you to put up an asset such as your car or savings as security. Because the lender has nothing to fall back on if repayments stop, these loans usually carry higher rates than a secured equivalent. Nothing of yours is directly on the line, though, and approval can be quicker.
Where they are used
Unsecured loans are common for things that can't or won't be secured: a wedding, a holiday, medical costs, consolidating other debts, or a renovation. Amounts and terms vary by lender, and a fixed rate gives you predictable repayments while a variable rate may allow easier extra repayments.
How they compare
The comparison rate brings most fees into one figure, and the establishment and ongoing fees and the rules on extra repayments and redraw fill in the rest. The total cost over the term says more than the monthly figure.
CompareThat is a comparison service, not a lender or broker. We show the products and let you decide. We don't include every provider in the market, and each lender's own terms are the final word. Browse the full personal loans range or compare loans side by side.
Expert view
“Unsecured loans trade a slightly higher rate for not putting an asset on the line, and for many borrowers that peace of mind is worth it. The comparison rate and the extra-repayment rules matter most, because the freedom to pay it down faster can save more than a small difference in headline rate.”

Term
What it means
Comparison rate
A single rate that folds the advertised interest rate together with most standard fees, so loans can be weighed on a like-for-like basis rather than headline rate alone.
Unsecured loan
A loan with no asset pledged as security. No specific asset can be repossessed, though the lender can still pursue you for the debt, and rates are generally higher because the lender carries more risk.
Secured loan
A loan backed by an asset (often the car or item you are buying). The security usually means a lower rate, but the lender can repossess the asset if you fall behind.
Fixed rate
An interest rate locked for the life of the loan, so repayments stay the same regardless of market movements.
Variable rate
An interest rate that can rise or fall over the loan term, changing your repayments.
Establishment fee
A one-off fee charged to set up the loan, sometimes called an application or upfront fee.
Extra repayments
Payments above the required minimum that reduce your balance faster and cut the total interest you pay.
Early repayment / exit fee
A charge some lenders apply for paying a loan out ahead of schedule, more common on fixed-rate loans.
Common questions
What's the difference between secured and unsecured?+
A secured loan is backed by an asset and usually has a lower rate; an unsecured loan has no asset pledged, so rates are typically higher but the asset isn’t at risk.
How much can I borrow unsecured?+
It depends on the lender, your income and your credit history. Limits and terms vary widely between lenders.
Are unsecured loans harder to get approved?+
Lenders take on more risk, so they look closely at income and credit history. A stronger credit profile generally means access to lower rates.
Can I pay an unsecured loan off early?+
Many allow extra repayments and early payout, though some fixed-rate loans charge an early repayment fee. The loan terms set out the fee.
Fixed or variable rate?+
Fixed gives certainty over repayments; variable can move with the market but often allows freer extra repayments. Which fits depends on the borrower's circumstances.
