Advertiser & sponsored content disclosure
Last updated 10 October 2026
We carry commercial content, and we believe you have a right to know which content is paid for and which is not. This disclosure explains how we identify advertising and sponsored content on CompareThat, in line with ASIC’s guidance on advertising financial products and services (Regulatory Guide 234).
What counts as advertising and sponsored content RG 234.188–189
Sponsored content is text, image or video content about a product, a class of products or a service that is published in exchange for advertising revenue, but that may otherwise look like ordinary editorial content. It includes “click-through” links to products and services that you can access when you engage with the content. On this site, that can include:
- products in a sponsored placement;
- fees paid to us for a click through to a provider’s website;
- banner or display advertising;
- sponsored articles or paid commentary within our guides and editorial content; and
- outbound links to providers that may pay us when you click through.
How we label it RG 234.193
Where a listing appears because a provider has a commercial arrangement with us, we mark it with a “Sponsored Placement” tag on the listing. Hovering over or selecting the tag reveals a short note explaining that the placement is paid for and links back to this disclosure, so that a paid listing isn’t mistaken for an unpaid result or a recommendation. Any banner or display advertising, and any sponsored article or paid commentary in our guides, is likewise identified as advertising. Advertising is presented so that it’s distinguishable from our comparison results.
A “Sponsored Placement” tag tells you a provider has paid for that placement. It is not a statement that the product is the best, the cheapest, or right for you.
Payment does not determine which products we show. We always consider all relevant products in the market against the filters applied, whether or not the provider pays us.
Where our data comes from
Advertising revenue does not change the figures or features we display. Rates, fees and product features come from Product Reference Data: each bank’s or lender’s own feed, published under the Consumer Data Right (CDR), and the plan data the Australian Energy Regulator hosts for energy retailers. Superannuation fees, returns and test results come from the annual product performance publications of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). See where our data comes from. For how money can and can’t influence the order of results, read how we sort and rank products, and for our revenue model overall, see how we make money.
Not all providers, not all features
We don’t compare every provider or product available in Australia, and our comparisons don’t cover every feature that may be relevant to you. CompareThat is a comparison service only. It is general information, not personal financial advice or credit advice, and doesn’t take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs.
