*Warning: the comparison rate shown is calculated by the lender on its own standard example, usually a $30,000 loan over 5 years. This comparison rate is true only for the example given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate.
The headline numbers
Personal loans are priced differently from home loans, and it changes how you should read any average. Most lenders use risk-based pricing, quoting a range rather than one rate and setting your actual rate from your credit history, income and the loan purpose. The advertised rate is the best case, offered to the strongest applicants, so the average across the market is a more honest guide to what you will pay.
The largest single lever on your rate is security. A secured loan is backed by an asset the lender can repossess, usually a car, and that lower risk buys a materially lower rate. The live tiles above show the average secured rate, the average unsecured rate and the gap between them across the lenders we compare. On a typical loan that gap is worth more than any amount of negotiating.
Fees deserve as much attention as the rate on a personal loan, more so than on a mortgage, because the loan is small and the term is short. An establishment fee of $150 to $600 plus monthly service fees can add a meaningful amount to a $15,000 loan over three years. This is exactly what the comparison rate exists to capture, and it is why the comparison rate on a small personal loan can sit well above the advertised rate.
Australians took out around $9.7 billion in new fixed-term personal loans in the June quarter of 2026, and close to half of it, about $4.7 billion, funded a road vehicle. If a car is what you are borrowing for, a dedicated car loan secured against the vehicle will usually beat a general unsecured personal loan, and it is worth comparing both before committing.
One structural point that catches borrowers out: a shorter term means higher monthly repayments but substantially less total interest, and many fixed-rate personal loans charge an early repayment fee that removes the option to fix that later. If you can afford the higher repayment now, taking the shorter term at the outset is usually cheaper than planning to pay a longer loan out early.

Terms on this page
- Secured loan
- A loan backed by an asset, usually the car being bought. If you default the lender can repossess and sell it, so the lower risk buys you a materially lower interest rate.
- Unsecured loan
- A loan with no asset behind it, approved on your income and credit history alone. Rates run several percentage points above secured loans, but you keep full ownership of whatever you buy.
- Risk-based pricing
- Setting your interest rate from your individual credit profile rather than one advertised rate for everyone. This is why personal loans quote a rate range, and why the advertised rate may not be the rate you are offered.
- Comparison rate
- A single rate that folds the advertised interest rate together with most standard fees and charges, so you can compare loans on a more like-for-like basis. It is calculated on a standard example loan, so your real cost can differ.
- Establishment fee
- A one-off fee charged to set up a loan, typically $150 to $600 on personal and car loans. It is included in the comparison rate, but that figure is calculated on a standard example loan, so on a smaller loan the same fee adds more to your real cost than the comparison rate shows.
- Early repayment fee
- A charge for paying a loan out ahead of schedule. Common on fixed-rate personal and car loans, and worth checking before you commit if you expect to repay early.
- Credit score
- A number credit reporting bodies calculate from your borrowing history to summarise your credit risk. Applications, repayment history and defaults all feed it, and lenders use it to price and approve credit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average personal loan interest rate in Australia?
The live tiles on this page show the average headline and comparison rate across the personal loans we compare, split by secured and unsecured, updated daily from official CDR data. Because lenders price by risk, your own rate depends on your credit profile.
How much cheaper is a secured personal loan?
The tiles above show the current gap between the average secured and average unsecured rate across the lenders we compare. Securing a loan against an asset usually costs less, because the lender can recover the asset if you default.
Why is the comparison rate so much higher than the advertised rate?
Because personal loans are small and short. An establishment fee and monthly service fees spread over three years affect a $15,000 loan far more than the same fees would on a mortgage, and the comparison rate folds all of that into one figure.
Will applying for a personal loan hurt my credit score?
Each formal application is recorded on your credit file, and several applications in a short window can weigh on your score. Comparing rates first, and using lenders that offer an estimate without a full application, limits how many marks you leave.
