How we make money
Last updated 10 October 2026
CompareThat is free to use. We don’t charge you to compare products, and we never mark up a provider’s rates or fees. Instead, we earn money from the providers we link to. This page explains how, because we think you should know what’s commercial and what isn’t.
CompareThat is operated by Compare That Holdings Pty Ltd (ABN 25 700 956 074).
Credit products: we take no payment
We do not currently accept any form of payment in connection with credit products, being home loans, personal loans, car loans and credit cards. No lender or card issuer pays us for a click, an application, a sign-up or a placement, and no credit product on this website is a paid listing. We will not accept payment in connection with credit products unless and until we hold, or are authorised under, the appropriate credit licence.
For credit products, we simply bring together the product information lenders publish under the Consumer Data Right, so you can view it in one place and do your own research. We do not suggest that you apply for any particular credit product, we do not help you apply, and we never receive or process an application.
How providers pay us RG 234.191
For savings accounts, term deposits, superannuation and energy plans, we may be paid by a provider when you click through to it. Depending on the arrangement, a payment can be earned on the click itself, on an application, or on a completed sign-up. The amount varies by provider and product, and in some cases we are paid nothing at all.
Whatever the arrangement, it is never a charge to you. Nothing on this page is a cost you pay, and it does not change the rate, fee or offer you receive, which is set entirely by the provider.
Payment for inclusion and sponsored placement RG 234.191
Outside credit products, some providers pay us for a sponsored placement, for example a product shown at the top of a table or in a highlighted card. A sponsored placement can change where a product appears in a list, and we mark every one with a “Sponsored Placement” tag. Super funds can pay for one too. On super, payment never changes which products we show, how our super hubs order them, or the fees, returns and test results we show, which come from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).
Paid placement does not determine which products we show. We always consider all relevant products in the market against the filters you have applied, whether or not the provider pays us. A product is never left out of a comparison because the provider has no commercial arrangement with us.
A commercial arrangement is never the basis for the underlying numbers we show. Rates, fees and product features come from Product Reference Data: each bank’s or lender’s own feed, published under the Consumer Data Right (CDR), and the plan data the Australian Energy Regulator hosts for energy retailers. Superannuation fees, returns and test results come from APRA’s annual product performance publications. None of it comes from any payment to us. See where our data comes from.
What we are not paid to do
- We are not paid by you. The service is free to consumers.
- We do not accept payment to alter a product’s rates, fees or features, or to misstate them.
- We are a comparison service. We are not a credit provider, a broker or the holder of an Australian Credit Licence, we don’t provide credit assistance or personal advice, and we don’t process applications. If you apply, you deal directly with the provider.
- We are not paid anything in connection with credit products.
Why this matters
Because we earn money from providers, a commercial relationship could in principle influence what we show. We manage that by taking product data straight from published sources (each bank’s or lender’s own CDR feed, the plan data the Australian Energy Regulator hosts for energy, or APRA’s publications for super), labelling paid placements, and disclosing how products are ordered. For the full detail, read how we sort and rank products and our advertiser & sponsored content disclosure.
We don’t include every provider or product available in Australia, and a comparison on this site won’t cover every feature that might matter to you. Always check the provider’s own disclosure documents before you decide.
