*Warning: the comparison rate shown is calculated by the lender on its own standard example, usually a $30,000 loan over 5 years. This comparison rate is true only for the example given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate.
The headline numbers
Australians borrowed around $4.7 billion to buy vehicles in the June quarter of 2026, close to half of all new fixed-term personal lending by value. That scale is why car loans are priced as their own product rather than as a general personal loan, and why the rates differ.
A car loan is usually secured against the vehicle itself, which is the reason it beats an unsecured personal loan. The live tiles above show the average secured rate, the average unsecured rate and the gap across the lenders we compare. The catch is what security means in practice: default and the lender can repossess and sell the car, and you remain liable for any shortfall.
The age of the car changes what you can get. Most lenders reserve their best secured rates for vehicles under a certain age, with the limit set by each lender and measured either when you buy or at the end of the loan term, because an older car is weaker security. Buying a ten-year-old car often means an unsecured rate even though you are buying a vehicle, which is worth knowing before you negotiate on the car itself.
Dealer finance is the main alternative, and it is not always the cheapest. It is convenient and sometimes carries a genuine promotional rate on new stock, but the finance margin is part of how dealers make money on a sale. Arranging a loan before you walk in gives you a rate to compare against and turns you into a cash buyer, which is usually worth more in the negotiation than any finance offer.
Balloon payments are the structural trap specific to car loans. Deferring a large lump sum to the end keeps monthly repayments low, but interest accrues on that deferred amount for the whole term, so the loan costs more overall. Worse, you can reach the end owing a lump sum on a car now worth less than the balloon, and have to pay it out, refinance it or sell the car to clear it.

Terms on this page
- Secured loan
- A loan backed by an asset, usually the car being bought. If you default the lender can repossess and sell it, so the lower risk buys you a materially lower interest rate.
- Unsecured loan
- A loan with no asset behind it, approved on your income and credit history alone. Rates run several percentage points above secured loans, but you keep full ownership of whatever you buy.
- Balloon payment
- A large lump sum due at the end of a car loan, which keeps monthly repayments low during the term. Interest accrues on the deferred amount the whole time, so the loan costs more overall.
- Comparison rate
- A single rate that folds the advertised interest rate together with most standard fees and charges, so you can compare loans on a more like-for-like basis. It is calculated on a standard example loan, so your real cost can differ.
- Establishment fee
- A one-off fee charged to set up a loan, typically $150 to $600 on personal and car loans. It is included in the comparison rate, but that figure is calculated on a standard example loan, so on a smaller loan the same fee adds more to your real cost than the comparison rate shows.
- Novated lease
- A three-way arrangement where your employer pays the lease and running costs of your car, mostly from your pre-tax salary. It can be cheaper than a car loan for some earners, but the tax saving depends on your job: if you leave, the lease stays with you and you pay it from after-tax income.
- Risk-based pricing
- Setting your interest rate from your individual credit profile rather than one advertised rate for everyone. This is why personal loans quote a rate range, and why the advertised rate may not be the rate you are offered.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average car loan interest rate in Australia?
The live tiles on this page show the average headline and comparison rate across the car loans we compare, split by secured and unsecured, updated daily from official CDR data. Your own rate depends on your credit profile and the age of the vehicle.
Is dealer finance cheaper than a car loan?
Not always. Dealer finance is convenient and occasionally carries a genuine promotional rate on new stock, but the finance margin is part of the dealer’s profit on the sale. Comparing rates beforehand gives you a benchmark and strengthens your position on the car price.
Should I take a balloon payment on a car loan?
It lowers monthly repayments but raises the total cost, because interest accrues on the deferred amount for the whole term. You can also finish the loan owing a lump sum on a car worth less than that amount, which then has to be paid out, refinanced or cleared by selling the car.
Can I get a car loan on an older car?
Yes, but often not at the best secured rate. Most lenders cap the vehicle age they will secure against, with each lender setting its own limit, measured at purchase or at the end of the term, so an older car may only qualify for an unsecured rate.
